Session Summary[edit source]
Synopsis[edit source]
The party continues their journey towards Coregilia by boat and encounters a wreck inhabited by a Sea Hag.
This Session[edit source]
Something amiss with those rocks capt'n...
A few hours after shoving off the party settles into a routine keeping a weather eye out for more Sauhagin or sharks. Aldran spots something odd about the cliffs they are passing by and they convince Captain Hvitserk to divert course to get a better look. As they approach the shore they sight an old caravel neatly sitting between two clefts in the 100' rock wall that forms the coastline here. Hvitserk points out a few rocks just beneath the surface of the water and decides to proceed no further than a few hundred feet off the cliff. Having no small boat the party decides to swim the short distance while the crew remain aboard.
Footprints in the sand
After swimming into the cove the party steps out onto a small sandy beach upon which the boat is sitting. Egon notices footprints in the sand leading from their location back (or is it to?) the boat and stays to investigate. Meanwhile Aldran and Balmaris climb about the wreck as Durmen keeps watch. Aldran attempts to lift the heavy oaken grate covering the entrance to the hold and loses his grip on the slippery wood. The grate falls and he sprains his ankle as he just barely avoids having his foot crushed. Making a cane he heads towards the stern where Balmaris has found another entrance to the hold in the captains stateroom. After some quick healing the two make preparations to go below while Durmen and Egon join them.
Dinner for the crew

Peering below Aldran sees a heavyset woman coming towards the stairs, exclaiming with some joy about finally being rescued. Moments later a middle aged woman smelling of fish appears, carrying a fish knife covered in blood at the top of the ladder and begins telling the party about how she was left behind when the crew took off to seek help. Balmaris smells something fishy with her story and begins questioning her about her healthy weight (for just eating fish) and where the rest of the crew are at which point she becomes indignant. Aldran attempts to intimidate her at which point she lashes out with the knife and transforms into a Sea Hag. A nasty battle ensues and Balmaris is killed. The party uses a combination of well chosen spells (shillelagh and ice bolt) plus good old fashion melee combat to finally kill the hag. Before Balmaris can bleed out they bandage his wounds and everyone heals up before heading below decks.
There be treasure here
Moving through the muck of the hags living space they find the discarded bones of the crew and partially butchered corpses. Just beneath the slimy water they find a few precious gems and some rusty but serviceable weapons. Heading topside they spot a pile of gear stacked at the back of the cliff wall. They recover a sailors footlocker with more gems, nine barrels of whisky worth, and multiple sacks of wheat of and other items from the ship. They take some of the rigging and form a raft from the barrels attuned with the other items from the ship. They paddle out to the ship and transfer their salvage aboard.
Someone order the seafood special?
Pleased with their haul Hvitserk suggests they consider joining his crew and start a life as privateers. As its now late afternoon a lively discussion ensues about the party's future course of action that rapidly leads to a decision to open one of the casks of whisky to celebrate. A few hours later after consuming a barrel of whisky and bounty from the sea everyone is passed out. Sometime after dark Egon is awoken by a loud clacking noise. Swarming over the side nearly a dozen small crabs begin crawling over the deck taking nips at the party and crews feet as they sleep. In the commotion half a dozen giant crabs also clamber aboard and force the party back as they advance up the length of the boat. Aldran wails away with his ax and in his haste he gouges the boat. Balmaris half asleep unloads wildly with a fire bold that misses the crab and hits the boat as well. It fails to ignite the deck wood as it's too wet but he quickly realizes how dangerous a fire at sea would be and switches to less risky spells. Durmen also unleashes a mix of combat spells in combination with Egon's deft use of a quarterstaff quickly bring down a few of the crabs. However Egon overextends himself and slips on some crab entrails twisting his back taking leaving him hindered the rest of the combat. Aldran recovers quickly from his earlier miss and working his ax with renewed vigor along with Balmaris spells (completely obliterating one) the party and crew take down the remaining crabs.
The journey resumes
Hvitserk and Helga waste no time in getting everything shipshape while Durmen makes crab chowder for everyone. As it will be dawn in a few hours the party takes a short rest. As dawn breaks over the sea they awaken as a brisk wind whips the sea and prepare to resume the journey to Coregilia that if all goes well they should make port within a day. On the journey the party decides they will try to return to the cove and with their loot hire a crew to salvage the caravel which they have decided to name the "Sea Hag". Hvitserk says it would cost around 2500GP to repair and with luck they should be able to find some craftsmen in Coregila or certainly in the large port city of Atrirr further south. Pleased with their plan they enjoy the salt spray and some warm crab chowder as the longboat heels over under the wind...
