Session 106 Boating is for sailors

Session Summary

Synopsis

The party deals with the results of the sahuagin attack and subsequent shipwreck the night before.

This Session

Decisions Decisions...

Aldran - Attempts to impress Captain Hvitserk by talking up his barbarian heritage. Hvitserk seems mildly impressed and relays some tales about the pirates who terrorize the local waters. The remainder of the party debates the merits of continuing south overland or attempting to repair the boat and continue by sea. Helga tired of the bickering goes to get breakfast and disappears over the nearby dunes. After further lively debate and some cajoling from Hvitserk the PC's decide to try to repair the boat before taking a chance on the road. Grumpy from not eating the PCs decide to tie a rope around Durmen and using a spell levitate him above the shark infested waters and "float him to the boat". They soon realize someone will still need to get him there so Hvitserk offers a keg of ale from his personal stocks still aboard the boat to Aldran if he swims the waters.

The bet is taken

Hvitserks Boat

Aldran seeing a change to impress the elder barbarian and retain his honor drags Durmen (now affectionally called meatsack) into the water and tying a rope to him swims towards the boat.

The PC's cant quite make out whats happening in the water and Helga who has since returned with some eggs from a local osprey nest has started cooking breakfast. Their attention turns to the meal and so they dont see a reef shark fin drop beneath the wave and head towards the swimmers.

Not far from the boat but to far from the shore to turn back Durmen is attacked by the shark, and critical fails his attempt to escape. He begins to drown. Aldran skewers the shark with his javaliin and the two of them frantically swim towards the boat as two other sharks attack the one Aldran skewered. Climbing aboard the foundering boat they take stock of the damage. While they are occupied a sahuagin quietly slips aboard the boat and stealthily moves towards Aldran and Durmen.

On the beach

Having gotten a decent meal in them Balmaris and Egon notice the sahuagin and try to get Aldran and Dormers attention by yelling and waving frantically to no avail. They run toward the water and Egon convinces Nail he can cast a spell to deal with the sharks but it requires a small blood sacrifice to activate the magic. Egon quickly skewers Nail's hand with a dagger in an attempt to attract the two other sharks. Shocked and bleeding Nail questions Egons methods. Egon replies it's part of a Druidic ritual which seems to satisfy Nail. Not seeing any effect on the sharks who remain near the boat, he convinces Nail he'll need more blood. This time Egon does way more damage than he intended, and spills quite a bit of Nails blood by putting a sizable hole through Nails hand. A large pool spread into the surf. The PC's wait to see if the sharks take the bait.

On the boat

Aldran take the rope he used to help Durmen make it to the boat, and quickly forms a crude lasso. Tying the loose end to himself he manage to catch the shark. Aldran shouts out "No you dont bucko" as it tries to swim to open water. With Durmen's help manages to pull it up to the boat.ldran critically hits the shark and knocks it teeth out as his axe embeds deep in the sharks jaw, as he pulls the battle axe free the sharks head rips open like a baguette. Durmen finally notices the sahaugin and using a combination of Ice Knife and Ray of Frost spell seriously injures the creature. Aldrin's axe hits home and the sahaugin decides retreat is the best option and dives over the side.

On the shore

Helga walks out with Egon while gently goading him to be brave if he wants to catch the shark he'll need to actually get in the water. They both walk out to mid thigh depth and begin splashing. The shark moves in quickly and attacks Egon critically wounding him in a massive bite that takes out part of his side, which kills him. He sinks beneath the waves. Helga grabs his corpse as he slips under the water and begins dragging him to the shore. After some quick thinking and the well timed use of Spare the Dying Egon is brought back from the dead. Egon mumbles deliriously - She talked me into going into deeper...

On the boat

Aldran ties the rope to the mast, and he and Durmen tie themselves together with the remaining line and begin the long swim back to shore. The current is too much for Duremen and as Aldran swims ahead he slips beneath the waves exhausted and drowns. Aldran finally notices the 'dead weight' and he doubles his efforts to get to shore before he too succumbs to his injuries along with growing fatigue and drowns. Pulling himself up on the beach Aldran gives mouth to mouth to Durmen. "Dont you give up me you bitch!" as he pounds his chest. Sputtering back to life, Aldran smiles a wide shit eating grin - and promptly tea bags Duremen as he get up.

On the shore

Resuming the journey south

Now safely ashore and with the remnants of the ships sail rigging lines attached to the base of the mast the party heaves mightily and manages to pull the boat free of the reef. Though partially filled with water due to the hole in the side from the rocks struck the night before they manage to get it to the tide line. A few hours later as the tides goes out leaving the boat sitting on the beach, and under Hvitserk's instruction the party repairs the hole in the damaged longboat. Two days later the boat is seaworthy again and the party shoves off into the Solonor Ocean to continue their journey south towards
